Cross County Elementary Core Values

Squirrel

Self Discipline- The Squirrel

School Motto: “We do what is best right now to achieve our future goals.”

The squirrel has a goal to gather as many acorns in the summer and fall to provide for itself during the winter. If the squirrel doesn’t stay focused on the steps to reach its goal, the consequences are grave. We want our students to:

  • Get in the habit of setting attainable personal/school goals

  • Learn what they need to do to achieve their goals.

Compassion- The Hog

School Motto: “Feeling deep in your heart the need to help someone in need.”

Scientists have found that hogs can feel empathy for other animals around them. Empathy is the feeling that propels us to compassion, which is the action. We want our students to have eyes that see the needs of those around them, feel empathy for those hurt or struggling, and are eager to help that person in any appropriate way.

Deer

Respect- The White-tailed Deer

School Motto: “Treat others the way you want to be treated.”

Any hunter knows that boundaries are important when chasing after a big buck. A hunter should stay within his/her allowed perimeter. Deer will set boundaries of their territory by stripping bark from the trees around them and marking the space with their scent. We want our school body to,

  • Recognize the boundaries of other people

  • Learn to set healthy boundaries themselves

Courage- The Speckled-belly Goose

School Motto:“Being strong and steady when things are scary or strenuous.”

As the winter months approach so do thousands of annual waterfowl visitors who flood our fields and distinguish our part of the Delta. Many of these birds come from as far as Antarctica and travel deep into parts of Mexico. Along the way our magnificent bird faces a variety of obstacles. Like the goose, we want our school to,

  • Persevere through difficult tasks and moments

  • Learn resilience through failures.

Duck

Turkey

Integrity- The Turkey

School Motto:“Do what is right, even when no one is watching.”

The turkey is a remarkable bird that is known for its plumage. When the gobbler fans his tail feathers, he is trying to display every last one. We want this bird to be a reminder for our school body that just as the turkey has nothing to hide, neither does a person of integrity. One who lies or is deceitful is constantly trying to cover their mistake, but a person of integrity has nothing to hide, because they strive to do what is right.

Gratitude- The Largemouth Bass

School Motto:“We get what we get and we’re grateful for it!”

Have you ever stood on the edge of a dock and thrown a piece of bread into the water? More than likely, you probably saw a fish come and gobble up whatever was offered! We want our school to get in the habit of remembering this visual: We might not always want the things life throws at us, but there is ALWAYS something we can be grateful for in the circumstance.

Bass

Honey Bee

Humility- The Honeybee

School Motto: “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.”

The honeybee works with the other members of its hive, unified to see the wellbeing of each member. No task is beneath the other, and all work together towards a common goal. The values of teamwork and cooperation are also highlighted through this value.
